Stump grinding can follow a tree removal or be a standalone job for a stump the last storm, or the last owner, left behind. It lowers the stump below ground level. Grinding does not establish that every root is gone: some tree species can send up new shoots from remaining roots.

Grinding leaves wood chips and sawdust mixed with soil. Those grindings are not a substitute for soil when restoring a lawn. Wood debris can interfere with grass establishment, and decaying wood can leave the area uneven as it settles. Discuss debris removal and soil preparation before planning seed or sod.

A lawn, a new planting, and a building project ask different things of the site. Tell us your intended use when requesting a quote, and confirm what grinding and cleanup include. For construction, have the person designing that work define any separate site preparation; a grinding quote is not confirmation that the ground is ready to build on.

Do you grind the stump when you remove the tree?

Stump grinding is an add-on to tree removal, rather than something to assume is included. Ask for it in the quote, along with debris handling and any separate preparation for the space.

How deep do you grind?

We grind below ground level. Confirm the depth and extent in the quote for your particular stump and intended use. Grinding does not rule out shoots from remaining roots or establish that a site is ready for planting or construction.

What happens to the grindings?

Discuss whether grindings will be removed and what cleanup is included when we quote the work. If you want grass there, wood chips and sawdust need to be addressed as part of separate soil preparation; filling the hole with grindings is not lawn restoration.
